Look, there are more than enough things to feel guilty about as a mom: yelling at your kids, not buying them the entire toy aisle, forgetting it’s crazy sock day at school, etc.  You know it’s true, and if you haven’t read my blog on my most recent mom guilt please do!!

Here’s something I refuse to feel guilty about: sunscreen.

Yes, that’s right.  The fact that I even remembered to put sunscreen on my kids some days should be a victory itself, right!?!  Now, it’s become sort of a “mom shaming” world of what KIND of sunscreen we are using on our kids.  Enough.

Do you know what I used to use as sunscreen?

Baby oil.  I also went most days without anything on my skin at all; no lotion or sunscreen.  Of course, I know this was very bad for me and wouldn’t want my kids lathering up with Crisco Oil like many of my friends did.  Yes, our generation knows better and has seen the effects of sun damage and skin cancer.  I love that we all know better and want to do better for our kids; this is great.

What I don’t love is the judgement of what kind of sunscreen I put on my kids.

I’ll admit it, usually I use an organic SPF 30 sunscreen I buy off Amazon on the kiddos, and it works great.  I cannot stand the zinc oxide ones that never rub in and always look white.  It drives me crazy and really isn’t feasible to rub in lotion on my wiggly child for more than a minute.  No thanks, it’s not for me!

I also learned from our doctor that anything over spf 30 is really just the same as an spf 30 protection, so I don’t feel the need to later my kids in spf 1,000.  Guess what?!  It’s okay.  I’m their mom and I’m doing what is best for them.

The other day I was out and about with the kids and decided to swing by a park.

I didn’t have our go to sunscreen on hand, so I swung into the nearby drugstore and picked up a bottle.  It wasn’t organic, it wasn’t a fancy name, but it was sunscreen and it was better than nothing.  Can someone tell me why I felt so guilty about it?!

All these articles and people pushing their organic beautycare and sunscreen in my face clearly have gotten to me and a lot of us moms.  I was waiting on another mom to reprimand me and tell me how I’m slowly killing my children.  I seriously kept looking over my shoulder when I had this normal sunscreen in hand.  Ridiculous.

Well, I’m here to tell you you’re doing a great job no matter what sunscreen you are using.  Also, Lord forbid your little one gets burnt.  It happens to us all, so don’t go beating yourself up about it.  We are all human and think of it this way, your kid got to play outside so you’re obviously parent of the year!!

Basically what I’m saying is this; do what you gotta do for your kids and don’t let anyone or anything make you feel bad about it.
