I will be the first to admit that I cannot stand sidewalk chalk.  I think the only things I despise more than sidewalk chalk are sandboxes and glitter.  I get it, I’m a mom and I need to loosen up a bit and embrace messy things.  I’m trying, but man is it hard!!

Here’s exactly why I can’t stand sidewalk chalk- the clean-up.  The kids end up covered head to toe in chalk.  It’s the kind of mess that makes me cringe just thinking about it.  I find myself dodging little chalk covered fingers as we make our way back into the house.  If I could cover the walls and floors on our walk up to the bathtub in plastic I would in a heartbeat.

When we finally make it to the bathroom to get ready for bath I somehow look like a rainbow and the kids somehow find more ways to get chalk on every surface of the bathroom.  Why is it always the bright pink that ends up everywhere too?!

A bath doesn’t seem to cut it with chalk cleanup.  The water gets disgusting and then I have to figure out a way to clean the kids in colored, filthy water.  The toddler won’t do a shower so it’s basically a double bath water kinda bath… Super frustrating.

After the cleanup of the kids is finally complete, I then have to go back through the house and clean everywhere they walked through on the way to the tub.  Usually this also includes wiping off the dog who somehow is now a new shade of color.  I also have to do laundry and clean their chalk covered shoes.  Seriously, is it worth all of this effort to entertain the kids for an hour?!? I’m still on the fence with that one but I’m making a conscious effort to let them chalk more.  It’s not their fault I’m so uptight, right?!?

I’m working on it and I think that’s the best I can do.

Side note- don’t get me started on what happens when it rains and washes away their masterpieces.  Meltdown city!!  They still haven’t grasped that sidewalk chalk isn’t permanent.  Eek.
